EHR-Agnostic Approach Helps Put Magic in the Middle

Since Moxe’s inception, we’ve been EHR agnostic. We knew that if we wanted to help solve the problem of healthcare affordability, we needed to position ourselves as a neutral party between providers and payers. An integral part of what makes Moxe an efficient, cost-effective, and privacy-centric data exchange partner is our ability to connect to and ingest data from multiple EHRs and then send data where, when, and in the format it’s needed, regardless of its source.

Today, Moxe is compatible with more than 75% of all EHRs in the U.S., including Epic, Cerner, MEDITECH, athenahealth, and Altera. That means Moxe covers over 150 million members, and we continue to work to integrate into other EHRs, based on our customers’ needs.

The value of being EHR agnostic

In short, working with Moxe for your data needs simplifies things. Unless all of your members’ medical records reside in one EHR, you need to be able to get data from different EHRs. If you’re like the vast majority of payers, you also likely need to send data to vendors who are helping support your risk adjustment and quality programs.

With Moxe, you don’t have to manage relationships with multiple vendors to get the data you need—when, where, and how you need it. We make sure payers have the discrete and non-discrete data they want for payment and operations use cases. We want you to be able to say, “We want X data in Y format for Z use case,” and not have to worry about which EHR it’s coming from. You know the data you need and where you need it; we worry about how to get to the data and send it in the format it’s needed.

We also know there are times you need to send data to other vendors for risk adjustment and quality. Moxe can deliver data directly from EHRs to your business associates, at your direction, in the format they need it. By removing the need for you to be a middleman between EHRs and technology partners with whom you entrust data, we save you time and money.

Our agile, flexible, transparency-focused approach

Being EHR agnostic means we have to remain flexible, curious, and adaptable. We pride ourselves on our agility and ability to tailor our solution to meet customers’ needs. We also pride ourselves on our ability to pivot when our customers’ needs change, whether due to new regulations or evolving business needs.

Recently, two of our customers have started to receive data in FHIR. We’ve been working with them to determine the best way to send data in FHIR from all EHRs from which they need data, all while adhering to the Da Vinci Implementation guide. As we’ve worked with our customers, we’ve run into some of the same challenges we’ve seen across the board in interoperability: Just because data meets a certain requirement, doesn’t mean it looks the same or is in a format that works for payers. Even when it’s in FHIR, data from different EHRs looks different. One way we provide value to our customers is that we are able to analyze the data we’re getting in FHIR from each EHR and figure out how to get it into the FHIR format in which payers want to receive it.
Just as an EHR-agnostic approach has been part of our solution from the start, so has transparency. To us, transparency means that payers have full visibility into the data they’ve requested, and providers know where their data is going and why. Transparency reduces abrasion between providers and payers that can become all too common when countless follow-up communications are needed in pursuit of data. With Moxe, you’ll always know where your data requests stand.

By removing the need for you to be a middleman between EHRs and technology partners with whom you entrust data, we save you time and money.

Questions to ask

How do you evaluate whether a potential data exchange partner will be able to get you the data you need? There are a few simple, key questions you can ask to determine how comfortable a vendor is getting data from multiple EHRs:

    1. How many and which health systems/providers are you currently live and exchanging data with?
Over 250,000 providers, which represents over 100 health systems, are currently live on Moxe.
    2. How many integrations have you done with a particular EHR?
With 360 connections to Epic, 133 to Oracle, 87 to MEDITECH, and over 12,000 to athenahealth, our depth of experience with EHR integration means we can get to the data you need.
    3. How many providers have you brought live within the past year?
We work in close partnership with our payer customers to ensure we are expanding our network to include their top health systems. Last year alone, we brought 17 new providers live across 3 different EHRs and an enterprise connection into a new EHR, representing over 12k TINs. In addition, we established over 250 new payer-provider connections to help facilitate the more seamless exchange of clinical data.

Parting thoughts

Moxe wants to be wherever the exchange of clinical data is needed because we believe we can do it the most efficiently and cost-effectively, all while safeguarding patient privacy, maintaining the highest level of data security, and delivering high quality clinical data for all payment and operations use cases.

As an EHR-agnostic vendor, we design solutions that are a win-win for payers and providers and contribute to improved interoperability across the healthcare ecosystem.

We’re here for you—whether you are looking for a one-stop shop clinical data exchange partner or for a vendor to fill in the gaps: maybe you’ve purchased a solution from an EHR, but that solution doesn’t connect you with all of your members’ data.

Whatever your current data needs are, we’d love to talk with you about how our solution might be able to bring some of the “magic in the middle” you’re looking for.
